CoderDojo helps youngsters learn coding, the language of the future!

A CoderDojo is a computing club that meets regularly and teaches young people computing skills, as well as informing them about what computing means in the real world. Students aged from 5 to 17 meet up and, under the supervision of and with guidance from a group of mentors, learn about a variety of computing topics, including HTML, CSS, Scratch and Python. These mentors are all professions in the area of computing and are giving up their time on a voluntary basis, which helps contribute to keeping CoderDojo completely free to attend!

A bit of history

CoderDojo is a non profit global movement founded by James Whelton and Bill Liao. It was first started in James Whelton’s school in early 2011 when James received some publicity after hacking the iPod Nano and some younger students expressed an interest in learning how to code. He setup a computer club in his school (PBC Cork) where he started teaching basic HTML and CSS. Later that year he met Bill Liao, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, who was interested in growing the project into something bigger.
In June 2011 the first CoderDojo was launched in the National Software Centre in Cork which saw extreme success. The Cork Dojo saw people travelling from Dublin frequently to attend sessions. Owing to this popularity a Dublin Dojo was launched soon after in Google’s Montevetro building.
By making the movement open source it has led to hundreds of dedicated champions setting up more Dojos around Ireland and subsequently around the world. At this moment there are 220 Cododojo’s in 22 countries. CoderDojo is a home-grown initiative started to promote computing at primary and secondary levels.

About Us

The start of CoderDojo in Turkiye was initiated by STAGE-Co, a community platform connecting investors, mentors and startups. The first CoderDojo will start in Istanbul, at Yazane, a coworking space that kicked off recently.
The aim is to start a CoderDojo at every city where STAGE-Co is active combined with any city for which we can find volunteers. We actively look for mentors (professionals or university students) to set up new CodorDojo’s in Turkiye.
